This is a very rare kimono depicting the scene of an ancient emperor enjoying a sightseeing tour of Arashiyama. The fabric is woven with fine bumps. It is a soft pink color. 1980s, all hand-painted, with gold leaf. One of a kind.
Arashiyama became famous for its cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in the 1200s, when the emperor at the time ordered people to plant a large number of cherry trees in the area.
The customs of cherry blossom viewing and autumn leaf viewing existed in Japan before that time.
These practices were practiced equally by everyone, from nobles to commoners. It was even considered bad to be indifferent to the beauty of nature in each season. These customs have not been lost in Japan to this day. With that in mind, it is not unnatural to see so many natural objects depicted on kimonos.
Now, the pattern on this kimono shows a portable shrine being carried by several men leading the way.
At that time, only the emperor and the retired emperor were allowed to ride this type of vehicle. The person in the handcart is probably the emperor or the wife of the retired emperor. And the person riding the white horse is probably a high-ranking aristocrat. The building seen behind them is the predecessor of Daikakuji Temple, which still remains in the suburbs of Arashiyama today, and was the emperor's villa.
It's heartwarming to see all the servants enjoying the outing.
The kimono is in very good condition. The obi and strings are not included.
