This dress is made of lustrous, shiny silk in a beautiful royal blue color. 1980s-1990s.
A one-of-a-kind piece. Small chrysanthemums, camellias, and bush clover are painted over a wide area, as if they are swaying in the wind. Among the many kinds of plants blooming in abundance, you will find two hexagonal boxes.
This box is a large wooden box decorated with lacquer and other techniques, called a "kaioke." Long ago in Japan, noble women would have identical beautiful designs painted on the inside of each shell. These were made for a game in which players would place the shells upside down and compete to find the matching shell. There are 180 shells in this box, meaning that a total of 360 colored shells are stored in this beautiful box, which is depicted as the pattern of this dress.
