This is a long undergarment made for men. From 1970 onwards.
Hand-painted. Made from a very soft and light high-quality silk fabric called "Habutae". This undergarment is also made from two layers of silk fabric, making it a warm undergarment.
From the mid-Edo period, men were required to wear kimonos in subdued colors. They began to demand that beautiful patterns be painted on their undergarments, nagajuban, because the designs could not be seen by anyone other than themselves and their families.
Generally, Mt. Fuji was a very popular motif for nagajuban (undergarments). In the past, when transportation was not well developed, everyone would have hoped to see Mt. Fuji with their own eyes, even if only once. This nagajuban features a rural road and Mt. Fuji depicted in detail and aesthetically.
In the past, tall pine trees were planted along major roads in Japan, so we can tell that this kimono depicts a post town along the road from which Mount Fuji can be viewed.
