Collection: kimono

Vintage kimonos were made from the mid to late Showa period. Compared to modern kimonos, they use more traditional techniques and require more time and effort to make, but at the same time, they have their own unique designs and colors. Vintage kimonos are popular with people looking for unique designs, and by incorporating them into modern outfits, you can enjoy a fashion that is different from others.

- If you would like to have the hem adjusted to your liking , please order it as an option (¥ 5,000 ).

・There are two ways to adjust the hem: " adjustment to outside " (reference photo), which is a typical kimono style, and " adjustment to inside " (reference photo is " adjustment to outside ") . If you are not planning to wear it in a kimono style , we recommend " adjustment to inside ".

As a piece of advice from TAMAKO ,

You can choose from 8 lengths for the hem: 110 cm, 115 cm, 120 cm, 125 cm, 130 cm, 135 cm, 140 cm, 145 cm . If you choose " adjustment to outside ", you need to choose a length that is at least 15 cm shorter than the actual kimono.

(Reference: How to measure: The length from the top bone of the spine ( C1 of the cervical spine) to the ankle is the rough guideline for making the traditional Japanese " outside adjustment ". With this as the maximum value, please specify your preferred length between 110 cm and 145 cm.)

About the length of the kimono and the "ohashiori"

"Why are women's kimonos so long?" is a question customers ask us every day in our store.

Have you ever seen a maiko or geisha dragging the sleeves of her kimono indoors?

In the old days, Japanese women used to wear long kimono hems that trailed indoors, like Western long dresses.

However, in modern times, as Japanese women have more jobs, it has become common for them to wear kimonos with a single adjustable string.

Kimonos were originally very expensive, so it was common for them to be passed down to her daughters or granddaughters of different heights.

For this reason, we adjust the length of the kimono without cutting it so that the length can be freely adjusted at any time. This is called "ohashori".

"Ohashiori" Adjusting Service (optional)

At AOI KYOTO ANTIQUES , we follow this traditional way of wearing kimonos and allow each customer to choose the length that suits their height or preference, and we also offer an optional service to adjust the length of the kimono using hand sewing, a traditional Japanese method.

We believe that by using this service, anyone can easily wear a kimono. The processing time for this service is about two weeks. Therefore, please understand that it will take about one to two months from the time of order, including the time required for the special Japanese kimono cleaning that is performed on all vintage kimonos (about 2 to 4 weeks).
